2/2 Parent Meeting Notes

Posted by LaDonna Sperry at Feb 3, 2009 6:48AM PST ( 0 Comments )

Good Morning

I wanted to get out notes from last nights meeting. We had a great attendance but I know that many of you were unable to attend. We have had a great year with communications so want to insure that everyone is on the same page.

Meeting began at 706pm

Coach Carder began the meeting with a review of the coaching staff and an introduction to the newest staff member Coach Mike Cottriel. Coach Cottriel will be the assist. Coach for JV along with Coach Brock Walden. Coach Cottriel has been teaching at the high school and has already been active at MHS Sports with support of the football team.

Practice – we will continue with the current winter conditioning schedule until 2/23.

2/23 Official Pitcher and Catcher conditioning – times are not yet confirmed but likely to be 3pm to 5pm daily after school. This is a mandatory session if the player wishes to tryout for position of either catcher or pitcher for the 2009 season. If they are interested at all in pitching or catching then they need to participate in this session.

3/9/09 is the official start date for tryouts for 2009 Fresh, JV and Varsity Teams.

All participants in tryouts must have a valid physical on file by this date. If a player does not have a physical he will be allowed to watch but not participate in the tryout session until the physical documentation has been received.

The teams will be determined and announced shortly after tryouts take place. The first scrimmage is scheduled for 3/21/09. (unless of course the snow is too high to really play good baseball).

The times for pitcher/catcher conditioning and the tryout sessions need to be confirmed thru Mr Adams. Then we will post these on our website at:

http://www.monarchbaseball.com

Coach Carder also reviewed an opportunity for spirit wear thru a company called Kesslers. We will establish a link on our website to this company. This company will offer our parents, players, etc the ability to purchase additional spirit wear, underarmour, shoes, etc at a discounted rate. Kesslers would register the parents, establish a code and the shopping could commence.

Coach Carder also advised that there will be Mizuno shoes at this Kessler’s website. Players are encouraged to purchase either black or Navy shoes for this season. Not a mandatory thing but preferred. If a player already has red or otherwise that is just fine.

Coach Carder then reviewed the Florida trip (times are posted on our website for flights). The players will travel as a team from MHS to Port Columbus airport using school buses. This will prob be a very early time of approx 5am or so…..more to follow.

Boys will need to keep their packing to baseball bag and 1 suitcase. This is what has been budgeted into our Florida trip costs. If parents have any questions on bag restrictions they are encouraged to review the baggage restrictions at the Airtran website.

Florida FAQ’s are also posted on our website. The baseball field complex is approx 1/2 mile from the Ramada where the players are staying. It is walking distance but we do have vans for their transportation.

Boys will be transported from Port Columbus when they return using MHS Buses and delivered to their parents at the HS.

Current game schedule is targeting to have 2 games Mon, Wed and Fri each. We do not have game times at this writing.

Please review Florida FAQs….Athletes will have means at the cafeteria but may want to have xtra $ for snacks, etc. They will have designated free time for beach and other things. If a player is traveling with parents they will be able to spend this freetime with parents if so desired. If you player is like mine….without a parent….and you wish him to be able to enjoy that freetime with another player and their family then the coaches must have a notarized document that authorizes them to release your player to that named other parent.

While in Florida the following are some xtra activities that have been budgeted into the expense of our trip:

Senior Dinner with coaches – date/time to be announced

Player/Parent Cookout – tentatively targeted for Tuesday of the week…this will be at the park near the beach and would be for all players and their families

Underclassmen Pizza – this will be held same date/time as Senior dinner

Restaurant Trip – targeting Wednesday of the week to take all players out for group dinner

Roommies – Coach Carder has not determined the method for assignment of players to rooms. There will be 4 to a room and he has not decided if players to choose or if he will do assignment to provide "role model" interaction between senior players and underclassment. This will be announced at a closer date.

There will be an indepth Florda meeting after the teams are announced. This will be for contract signing (related to florida, etc) and final review and receipt of Florida packs. This will be a very critical meeting so watch emails and website for further date/times.

I got to do my every meeting review of Bingo. This continues to be an invaluable source of $ for our teams and our parents have been tremendous this year with their support. Some upcoming schedule gaps were shared and I let everyone know that I will continue the "nagging" on empty slots via emails etc.

We do seem to have several potential players who have no scheduled or worked bingos. Please take a look at the schedule and let me know. It is important that you get these worked and scheduled to avoid any impacts on the Florida trip. Bingos are not just supporting the trip but all of baseball expenses. Your help is appreciated.

We are going to be changing our Sunday bingo to a Monday night. We feel that this will be better from a profit perspective since we would not be competing for Sunday players with the Catholic Church bingo. It will also allow our parents to not spend their Sunday afternoon working bingo. From time perspective Bingo would begin at 7pm for players. That would put our volunteers there at 530pm. This would hopefully work ok with work schedules, etc. We are pending receipt of a revised bingo license to allow us to make the shift. Currently targeting the first of March but need license before making change.

We also talked more about our player poster. This is something that we absolutely must do this year. We want to insure that lots of people get to see our talented athletes in a fun forum. We are seeking sponsors so please let me know if you are aware of any…..we have heard from Monarch Pizza, etc….we can also put links to our sponsors on our website for additional coverage beyond poster. Hopefully we will have a letter for sponsors shortly. Our timeframes are tight if we want to get photos of the boys and have the posters run so they can be out during our season.

Our meeting ended at approx 740pm.

I will also post these notes on our website. As an aside….I am hopeful we are reaching as many of our potential players as possible. If you are aware of someone that I am missing please do not hesitate to forward my emails, send them my email address: lsperry@columbus.rr.com…refer them to our website. We don’t want to have any player caught without the information if we can prevent it.

Thanks again!…….I know that personally….I am getting itchy for baseball….Opening day is just around the corner…..nothing better than a great game of baseball with my hat, scarf, gloves, boots and heavy blanket…:)
